How to verify the reliability of online stores

Thanks to the wide availability of the internet, online shops such as those hosted by Blogger and LiveJournals are sprouting like spring rain. It has become a norm for offline shops to have an internet presence. Scam websites can also be used to trick shoppers.

Here are 10 tips to help ensure that online shops you do not know are reliable.

#1. Don’t be anxious about buying from an online store if you don’t know if it is safe. Take a look at its online activity for a while. Is the store regularly updating new products? The updates for fast-paced consumer goods, such as women’s fashion, are typically made weekly or every other day. If there are no updates for several months, it is likely that nobody is managing the shop.

#2. Register to join the store’s mailing lists. Any legitimate business will be keen to get potential customers on its mailing list. You will receive emails from the store once you sign up for their mailing list. If everything seems calm, I might have questions about the store.

#3. Sending an email to customer support is a good way to verify that the store is genuine. Is there a response from the store? Is the response prompt? Or did it take 2 weeks for it to reach you? A quick response in between 1 and 3 days is the norm.

#4. Shopping online for clothes is safer if you shop at shops that have positive reviews. You can find out the satisfaction of customers by reading testimonials. Most stores will post testimonials online.

#5. #5. These discussions can be very helpful in identifying any problems or complaints the store might have.

#6. You can find reviews and ratings about the shop. Online shopping directories can review online shops, and this will be displayed when you Google for the shop (see tip #5). Check the links for these online shopping directories to find out if any reviews have been written.

#7. Take a look at the merchandise in the store. Do you have enough information to make informed decisions? Serious shops should be able to provide all the information necessary for customers to make informed purchases. Is it possible for a fashion shop to provide exact measurements of the clothing they sell? Is there any effort made to make sure the shopper understands what he/she is buying?

#8. Pay attention to the payment details. What payment options are available? Are they PayPal Verified or accept PayPal? PayPal Verified is a PayPal verification that PayPal has verified the account you are paying to. Avoid paying by direct wire transfer if you are unsure about the store. If there are any problems with your purchase, PayPal offers you the option to dispute them.

#9. #9. Does the shop expand beyond its online shopfront and into social networking sites such as Facebook? The social networking sites can be a great way to get customers. Legitimate shops would love to be part. An online shop cannot be considered a dubious store because of all the ‘friends’ that are available.

#10. Check that the shop has been registered with local authorities. Singapore’s Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), for example, requires stores to register. As a consumer, the ACRA can provide details about the shop.

These tips will help you choose reliable shops to buy from. Be aware of the tips above and you will have a safe online shopping experience.
